Spiced Pear Jam and the Beauty of Simple Things [RECIPE]
Good Afternoon My Friends!
I hope you all are having a lovely Wednesday. I had every intention of sharing a potato soup recipe with you today. But after the recipe went kaput, I stared around my tiny eating area scrambling to whip up something new. Something different. My thoughts were interrupted suddenly by my daughter shouting, “Mom! We’re almost out of Earth butter!”. Don’t you hate it when you just went to the grocery store and yet, the very next day you run out of a staple item? I sighed… and then looked at a bundle of pears I had purchased. “I’m going to jam those” I said aloud with determination and then went to work!
I’ve always wanted to be that woman with a giant root cellar full of mason jars chock-full of pickled vegetables and sauces of every kind. I envy those Amish homes where they have massive gardens sprawling across their land, and every dish is homemade from scratch. (Right down to their laundry detergent!). Yes, I’m that kind of girl that dreams about living in a farmhouse and tasting vegetables right from the garden. But my reality is something entirely different. My pears came from the supermarket. My cooking area is the size of a cupboard, and I whipped this up in a single pot on the electric eye. And yet… it was divine.
I chopped down the pears and tossed them into the pot. In went 1 cup of sugar, a tablespoon of ground cinnamon and a teaspoon of ground cloves. Finally, I grated in the zest of 1 orange and was ready to cook. I used my hand masher to begin breaking down the fruit, and then I waited…. and waited…. and waited! Patiently I stirred every 20 minutes or so while the fruit simmered away and began to break down.
The house began to smell like wassail. As the jam bubbled gently for an hour and a half, I swooned… taking tastes with a spoon here and there as it turned into a beautiful, golden jam. By the time it was done my daughter had her nose over the pot right alongside of me. We inhaled deeply and sighed. There’s nothing quite like homemade jam. Spread this on a slice of your favorite toast and enjoy the simple things in life. I know you’re going to love it as much as I do. Stay tuned for more delicious recipes. Spiced Pear Jam
Makes: 4 cups
- 6 pears, cored and chopped (feel free to leave the skins on!)
- 1 cup of sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1 orange, zested
- Grab a large stock pot and toss in all of the ingredients.
- Use a hand masher and begin breaking down the fruit as the pot heats up to a simmer.
- Allow the jam to simmer uncovered for 1.5 hrs. as you mix occasionally. (I used a timer to stir every 20 minutes).
- Place in an airtight container and set in the fridge to chill.
- Eat with your favorite toast or scones! Chow down, you deserve it! ❤
